IV Infusion

What Is An IV Infusion?

IV infusions, or intravenous therapy, is a medical technique that administers fluids, medications, and nutrients directly into a person’s vein using either an injection or infusion. The word “intravenous” literally means “into the vein.” Contrary to injections administered by needles, infusions send the fluids directly into your vein using a thin tube over a set period of time. The two main methods of IV infusion are:

  • Pump Infusion: The pump is attached to your veins and in a steady manner, it sends the medication directly to your bloodstream.
  • Drip Infusion. This method uses gravity to deliver a constant amount of medication over a set period of time. With a drip, the fluid, nutrients, or medication travels out of the bag into a thin tube and into your bloodstream.

What Are IV Infusions Used For?

Fluids, medication, vitamins, antioxidants, and amino acids utilized in an IV infusion treatment can help you with several symptoms and conditions including but not limited to:

  • Hangover relief
  • Athletic performance recovery
  • Immune system support
  • Pregnancy symptom alleviation
  • Migraine and headache relief

What Are The Benefits Of IV Infusion?

Technology is ever-changing and constantly evolving. IV infusion has several benefits including:

  • Faster results: Patients can receive medication very quickly when they experience an emergency, like a heart attack, stroke, or poisoning. In these circumstances, taking pills or liquids by mouth may not be fast enough to get these drugs into the bloodstream. During a medical emergency, an IV fusion is critical for the patient’s safety.
  • Prevent ineffectiveness: Medications may be given by IV infusion. In comparison, medications taken orally can get broken down by enzymes in your stomach or liver and would not be as effective.
  • Control medication: IV medication is often used because it helps control the dosage of medication. IV infusions can be used to deliver fluids, nutrients, and/or medication in large or small amounts.

What Can I Expect From IV Infusion Treatment?

During an IV infusion treatment, the infusion will be administered by injecting a needle attached to a thin tube directly into one of the patient’s veins. This tube is connected to an IV bag containing the prescribed fluids, nutrients, or medication. Once attached to your vein, the solution slowly drips or is pumped into your bloodstream.

The duration of each session depends on the medication being administered and your specific case. You can always bring activities that will allow you to relax such as a book, laptop, or headphones during the procedure. You should have peace of mind that your provider will monitor the infusion adequately to meet your needs.

Am I A Good Candidate For An IV Infusion?

Although IV infusions are effective for most people, you should speak frankly with your provider about your health and wellness goals, and go over your medical history before scheduling an IV infusion treatment.
